    Summer Fitness

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U. S. An inactive lifestyle is a top risk factor for heart disease which means regular exercise can help lower the risk. The benefits of regular exercise include strengthening the heart, lowering blood pressure, improving muscle tone, and reducing body fat to reach a healthy weight. Most people need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day to receive health benefits. If 30 minutes of time is too difficult, divide the activity into three 10-minute sessions instead. In addition to providing fitness equipment at work, VIP also makes sure to include a variety of fitness activities as part of the Off-Site Day Habilitation (OSDH) program. Summer is the perfect time to go outside as there are so many activities from which to choose. Three of the more popular OSDH fitness events include swimming, going to the gym, and visiting local parks. Read More

At Home with Regency

janet_mahy_intRegency Management is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation formed to provide subsidized semi-independent housing for adults with disabilities. This type of housing allows the person to experience independence, while still receiving the necessary assistance in the form of case management, and Direct Care staff to provide help with home living skills, community involvement, recreation, medical needs, and money management.

Housing

regency_jackson_lobby

We currently have three apartment buildings located in Cape and Bollinger counties. There are 20 units in Regency House of Cape, 15 units in Regency House of Jackson, and 15 units in Regency House of Marble Hill. Each unfurnished apartment is approximately 500 square feet and contains a refrigerator and a stove. All utilities including water, electricity, and trash are included in the monthly rental price; cable service is available for an additional monthly fee. Regency apartments are subsidized through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The rental price varies depending on each person’s financial situation, but is typically 30% of an individual’s income after allowable deductions.

In addition, Regency Management also maintains Regency Terrace of Cape (RTC), an 8-bedroom group home located in the Cape Girardeau community. This residence provides 24-hour care for individuals who require continual assistance to complete daily living and self-care tasks. Each individual is provided with his/her own bedroom, which is decorated for each tenant’s individual taste. The rest of the house, which includes an exercise room, laundry room, kitchen, dining room, and living room, are shared by all of the residents. A “house parent” is on-site with the residents at all times to provide meals, medication, assist with daily living needs, and encourage residents to take an active role in the maintenance of the household. RTC is a one-story building, which is beneficial for residents who may have mobility issues.

Services

Direct Care staff members are available on a scheduled basis to assist apartment residents with cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, and personal hygiene needs. Depending on the personal needs of the individual, some staff members also teach skills in cooking, nutrition, and money management.

Programs

Residents are encouraged to create friendships by participating in community activities. There are planned excursions every week to local stores, restaurants, and other community events such as bowling, concerts, and museums. In addition, residents are offered opportunities to participate in recurring activities such as aerobics, movie nights, arts and crafts, reading groups, and monthly dinners to celebrate the residents’ birthdays.
